Paul R. Jackson Student Center

Steven Jackson Local real estate developer Steven P. Jackson wanted to remember and honor his father, Paul R. Jackson, in a way that would recognize all he had done for his community in Albuquerque throughout the years. The elder Jackson, who passed away in 1982, was a respected local insurance businessman, former board member at Citizen's Bank and influential leader in Albuquerque who believed in giving back to his community through education. Today, he would be proud to know that his son is following in his footsteps with the announcement of a generous donation to the University of New Mexico's Anderson School of Management.

At the Anderson School of Management we strive every day to engage our students -- to make a difference in their lives. More than merely building careers, our purpose at Anderson is to build character by grounding our students in the core principles of integrity, responsibility and skilled stewardship of our economic resources.

At Anderson, we are preparing the next generation of business leaders through:

  • Shaping Intellect & Character
  • Advancing Knowledge & Practice of Management
  • Promoting Economic Development
  • Building Intellectual Community

Overall Objective

To create more excitement and synergy at Anderson with hands-on experiences, meeting space and information flow, thus encouraging students to spend more time at Anderson School of Management, studying and preparing to become future business leaders of New Mexico.

Current Projects and Future Plans

The focus of our five-year plan is to create “Centers of Excellence,” programs that support the business community while providing learning experiences that engage and intrigue our students. Some of Anderson’s plans for the future include:

  • Changing the Face of Anderson
Our first major undertaking will be to build an addition that will transform the Graduate School of Management building into a venue for lectures, conferences and receptions as well as a place where students can gather to discuss projects and current events with faculty and peers, do homework or just relax. Wireless internet access for online research and communication will be available.

Also housed here will be the Student Financial Services Center - stimulating interest in investment management through practical experience. For Fall 2005, while the Financial Services Center is being built, students will manage a multi-million dollar portfolio. When the Center is completed, the Investments class and other related Finance programs will be located on the second floor of the GSM.

Groundbreaking for the Centers is anticipated for Spring 2006 with an opening for Fall 2006.

I’d like to invest in the Capital projects for the Anderson School of Management

  • Transformational Student Learning Experiences
We are striving to provide more experiences outside the classroom. Hands-on opportunities to practice classroom and textbook lessons better prepare our students for real-world business.

One way we achieve this is by sending students to the Washington Campus Program. A non-profit, non-partisan consortium of business schools, the program is dedicated to the principle that an understanding of how government works is valuable to all business leaders. Students may receive 3-6 units of credit for their participation in the weeklong summer program in Washington, D.C.

Another example is the “Study Abroad” program. Students learn in a bi-national classroom consisting of students from UNM and ITESM (Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey), one of the top business schools in Latin America. This is a unique educational opportunity to learn about the Mexican economy and business environment.

I’d like to invest in “Transformational Experiences” for Anderson Students

  • Economic Development
We want Anderson to be recognized as the heart of the state’s economic development activity. New Mexico has many comparative (climate, natural beauty and energy reserves) and competitive (two national laboratories, three major research universities, four major military establishments and a burgeoning aircraft industry) advantages that well position it for future growth. We plan to play a role in leveraging these assets into better jobs and higher living standards for all New Mexicans. As of June 30, 2005, with the support of the New Mexico State Legislature, the Anderson Foundation and 44 other individuals and corporations funded a $1.5 million Chair in Economic Development.

I’d like to invest in Economic Development activities at the Anderson School of Management

Other Investment Opportunities

Giving makes the difference between a good business school and a great business school. Such is definitely the case for the Anderson School of Management. Unrestricted annual support enables Anderson to attract and retain the best faculty and staff and to provide student access to exemplary technology. This has led to national and international recognition for Anderson particularly in the areas of business ethics, diversity, management of technology and interdisciplinary accounting.

Establishing an endowment to support student scholarships or academic programs is a lasting way to make difference at the Anderson School. An endowment is a permanent fund which the University invests. The interest drawn off the endowment funds the program, scholarship or other need determined by the donor. Approximately 4.5% of the endowment is available annually for funding.
