Student Experiential Learning

UNM Anderson prioritizes offering students abundant hands-on learning opportunities to bridge the gap between classroom knowledge and real-world application. Through active engagement with real-world experiences beyond traditional lectures, students gain the tools and confidence essential for success in their future careers.

Student Engagement, Empowerment and Development Center

SEED is a crucial component of student life at UNM Anderson. It provides a range of resources and activities aimed at enhancing students' academic experiences and personal development. SEED fosters a supportive community through student organizations, leadership programs, career services, and various events, promoting networking opportunities and holistic growth among students.

  • 1780 students took part in career-focused workshops, events and fairs
  • 400+ students used the Learning Lab for free, peer-based tutoring
  • 171 employers engaged with Anderson students

Facilitated Internships

Facilitated internships offer students a vital bridge between academic learning and real-world application. Supervised and structured, these experiences occur within professional environments, providing invaluable hands-on learning opportunities. Anderson's ability to offer stipends, thanks to support from participating organizations and donors, not only encourages student participation but also enhances accessibility, ensuring financial constraints don't hinder learning while providing valuable work for the organization.

  • 103 students took part in internships this year, with 95% reporting they learned new skills
  • Nearly 7 of 10 students said their internship helped them draw a higher salary in a subsequent job

Sales and Business Development Center

Through an immersion of hands-on, experiential learning underpinned by a philosophy of practice, repetition and constructive feedback, students emerge not only as adept sales professionals but also as individuals fortified with confidence and the resilience to navigate complex challenges.

  • Two Anderson students tied for first place at RNMKRS, the nation's largest college sales competition in Fall 2023, and in Spring 2024 three Lobos placed in top five at RNMKRS out of more than 1000 students and 47 universities
  • Named a top sales program by the Sales Education Foundation for the third consecutive year 

UNM Regents Student-Led Portfolio

Anderson students learn and sharpen their investment, asset research and pitch creation skills through the Investment Management course each semester. What started as a $2 million portfolio has grown to more than $5.2 million thanks to our student investors and Investment Advisory Council mentors.

  • $5.2 million student-managed fund; largest in the state
  • Portfolio returns provide over $200,000 annually to fund UNM scholarships

Innovation Academy

UNM Anderson offers a variety of programs to assist students in finding creative solutions to problems by thinking like entrepreneurs and developing transferable skills that they can use in both academic and professional settings.

  • 2100+ UNM students participate in its programs, classes and events to practice thinking and skills for entrepreneurship
  • 300+ students received academic credit and cash awards to start their businesses

Student Competitions

The student pitch competitions at UNM Anderson offer aspiring entrepreneurs multiple opportunities each academic year to showcase their business ideas or to tackle real business challenges. They play a crucial role in student learning and growth by providing hands-on experience in refining pitches, validating business concepts, and receiving valuable feedback. Participants develop critical communication and presentation skills while gaining exposure to potential investors and mentors, preparing them for the challenges of launching and scaling their ventures.

  • Four pitch competitions each year, from a 90-second pitch to full commercialization plans
  • 150 students competed for over $60,000 in awards to invest in their business ideas

Behavioral Lab

Anderson's Behavioral Lab, located in the McKinnon Center for Management, is a state-of-the-art human behavior research facility that serves as an important research and teaching resource.

  • Provides 400 students hands-on experience each semester
  • Supports faculty research with behavioral insights that contribute to top-tier journal articles
  • Rivals those found in the top 10% of business schools across the U.S.

Global Scaling Challenge

The Challenge provides student teams and mentors from around the globe a distinctive opportunity to delve into and address intricate scaling requirements and obstacles encountered by businesses operating within diverse environments. Collaborating with actual firms, these expert-led student teams present their findings to both the firms themselves and a panel of judges through a live internet-based format.

  • This live, online competition added regional qualifier events in 2024 for the five represented continents
  • 40 teams vied for $35,000 in prizes and virtual internships with participating firms
