Forums brings together students, community members to discuss cybersecurity in the U.S. and its impact locally; highlights importance of Internet safety

(Albuquerque, NM) If you use the Internet you will not want to miss the Cyber Citizen Forum on October 26 from 4 – 6 p.m. at the UNM Anderson School of Management. The Forum featuring Timothy Fraser from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will elevate the issue of cybersecurity and prompt action and collaboration to increase Internet safety across the community.

Fraser is the Director of the Department of Homeland Security's Stop.Think.Connect. Campaign, a national public awareness effort that aims to increase the understanding of cyber threats and to empower the American public to be safer and more secure online. As part of this initiative, the Campaign promotes the expansion of the cyber workforce, including defining, attracting, and retaining cybersecurity expertise as well as outlining career path strategies.

"Our partnership with DHS is another great opportunity for UNM and its graduate cybersecurity program to extend their outreach to the community," said Alessandro Seazzu, Director of the UNM Center for Information Assurance Research and Education (CIARE). "It also supplements the education initiatives UNM students conduct with local K-12 schools and the free information assurance assessments extended to local businesses."

Cyber Citizen Forums are signature programs of the Stop.Think.Connect. Campaign. The goal of Cyber Citizen Forums is to initiate dialogue about daily online habits and protection from the four main issues affecting people online: cyberbullying, cyber predators, identity theft, and fraud and phishing. The Campaign, fulfills a key element of President Obama's 2009 Cyberspace Policy Review, which tasked the Department of Homeland Security with developing a public awareness campaign to inform Americans about the risks that come with being online and provide tools to protect them online.

"Education and professional development are critical to the success of building and preparing cybersecurity leaders of the future," said Tim Fraser, Director of the Campaign. "Working with Centers of Academic Excellence like CIARE to host these Cyber Citizen Forums allows us to showcase the important role of education and academia in securing our Nation's cyber infrastructure." CIARE supports the AACSB accredited graduate program with an emphasis in the management of information security, fraud and forensic accounting and an interdisciplinary focus on behavioral problems in protecting information. It has received a designation from the National Security Agency and the DHS as a center of academic excellence in Information Assurance.
