Corrective Action Plan

Failure to Meet Academic or Professional Standards

The UNM Anderson Corrective Actions govern the College’s response to a student’s failure to progress adequately academically in the College or who has committed a violation of the law or University regulations and policies that apply to the student. Violations could including the Code of Professional and Ethical Conduct, the UNM Anderson Academic Honesty Code, the UNM Student Code of Conduct, or the University’s Discrimination and Harassment Policies, or a number of other policies that cover student, faculty, or staff behavior. As with all students, UNM Anderson students are subject to the University’s Student Conduct Regulations and procedures for enforcement of those regulations. UNM may also issue sanctions as appropriate via the Student Code of Conduct (‘Section 4: Sanctions’).

Faculty Members should report both academic and behavioral misconduct to the appropriate University and UNM Anderson Offices.

  • Per Faculty Handbook Policies D175 (for undergraduates) and D176 (for graduate students), faculty encountering academic dishonesty from students should report the student to the Dean of Students Office.
  • Per Faculty Handbook policy E40, students, staff, or faculty encountering research misconduct should report the actor along with supporting documentation to the office of the Vice President for Research.
  • Faculty are also advised to report incidents of academic or student misconduct to the Dean’s Office. UNM Anderson can help guide the faculty member on the sanctioning process and initiate corrective action as appropriate.

Campus Resources

UNM provides many resources to help faculty and staff with disruptive student behavior. The Dean of Students maintains a comprehensive list of on-campus resources for both faculty and students.  Likewise, UNM Campus Assessment Response Education (CARE) has online resources for you to consult when you are trying to address a crisis situation related to a student, including filing a report about a crisis or potential threat. A student who may be in a time of need or crisis may be referred directly to LoboRESPECT Advocacy Center and other resource centers can assist as well.  Please refer to the CARE Consultant Referral Chart when seeking referrals to the correct UNM unit.  The Academic Integrity and Research Office (AIRE) provides content, promotes standards, and has developed informed pedagogy for instruction of the responsible conduct of research (RCR).

In the event of an emergency, please call UNM Campus police at (505) 277-2241. All information about alleged sexual violence or misconduct shared by any individual is required to be reported to UNM’s Office of Equal Opportunity, and please review your Title IX reporting obligations.

Corrective Actions

When a member of the UNM Anderson community reports academic misconduct, UNM will follow the procedures outlined in Pathfinder (policies D175 and D176).

For professional behavior infractions not explicitly dealt with in the Code of Professional and Ethical Conduct, the violation will be reported to the UNM Anderson Dean’s Office. The Dean’s Office will determine the appropriate sanction in conjunction with Director of the appropriate program and/or supervisor. Sanctions may include written personal reflections, warnings, probation, and actions up to and potentially including suspension from registering for classes at UNM Anderson.

Claims of research misconduct as defined under UNM policy E40, will be evaluated and reported by the Office of the Vice President for Research. Sanctions, corrective actions, and appeals will be determined as detailed under that policy.

Honors Council

The UNM Anderson Honors Council serves in an advisory role to the Dean’s Office and will handle all appeals around professional and behavioral violations of the UNM Anderson Code of Professional and Ethical Conduct. The composition of the Honors Council is determined by the Dean, but may include a representative of the Dean’s Office, department chairs, GPO and UPO leadership, and student leaders serving at the discretion of the Dean.

The Honors Council will handle appeals of Professional Violations of Code of Conduct Policy, and will meet (as needed) no more than twice a semester to review sanctions. Students wishing to appeal a sanction may apply in via e-mail to the UNM Anderson Dean’s Office no later than two weeks after the sanctions were issued.
