Faculty Spotlight - Dimitri Kapelianis

Transcript

My name is Dimitri Kapelianis. I'm an associate professor of marketing and I also run our Center for Sales and Business Development.

My research focuses on international management and international marketing. I'm especially interested in cross-national comparisons, so either across the entire set of countries in the world or focusing on a more limited set of countries, especially emerging markets in that context, especially the BRICS countries, so Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Within the context of international research, in research of emerging markets, I'm particularly interested in consumers at the bottom part of the pyramid. These are typically the very first consumers in the world and looking at how they emerge from the bottom of the pyramid.

My favorite class to teach is our introduction to sales class called Professional Selling. It's very hands on, it's very practical, applied, experiential. The vast majority of students who come into that class don't intend to pursue careers in sales or business development, but they've heard that the class is a good class to take. They've heard that regardless of what career they pursue, they're probably going to be needing selling skills. And what we learn in that class is the basics of the sales process through repeated practice, role plays and experiences. By the end of the class they've learned the basics of the sales process.

The main thing I love about Anderson is our student body. The students that we serve come from incredibly diverse backgrounds. Many of them are first generation students and they are scrappy fighters. They work part-time, they work one or two jobs to make it through Anderson. And they are hungry. They really are looking to improve themselves and change the trajectory of their lives and their families' lives. There's something about a student that is hungry for opportunity that makes it incredibly rewarding to teach.

Faculty Spotlight - Han Li

My name is Han Li. I'm an associate professor from MIDS Department.

I love Anderson because of its collaborative and supportive work environment. I have worked with several of my colleagues on several research projects, and we have been published in top journals like GS and the Information System Research.

My current research interests focus on gamification, health IT, information privacy, security and the different kinds of misinformation, such as fake news and fake product reviews. During the pandemic, I worked on a project using text analytics skills to compare fake COVID news and the real COVID news to be able to propose a real-time data-based system to detect fake COVID news and recommend the real news to readers in order to reduce the spread of fake COVID news.

Besides working at Anderson I like to cook, read and walk in the beautiful neighborhood of Albuquerque.

Faculty Spotlight - Catherine Roster

Transcript

I'm Catherine Roster and I'm in the Department of Marketing and Information Decision Sciences.

My favorite classes to teach are those in which I get to introduce students to marketing for the first time. Of course, students are always familiar with marketing from their perspective as a consumer, but what I enjoy doing so much is taking them behind the scenes and showing them the strategy and the science that goes into developing and executing a really thoughtful and effective marketing plan.

My research addresses problems with overconsumption and its impact on consumer and societal well-being. So for instance, I'm currently doing a project where I'm examining the practice of upcycling both with clothes and with everyday household items that would normally end up in landfills.

What I really love about Anderson is the people. Everyone, the faculty, the staff and the administrators truly care about student success and the quality of our programs. The other thing I think that makes Anderson so special is not only do they give everyone the opportunity to succeed but they also provide the resources and the skills to enable people to succeed.

Outside working, you'll find me curled up with a good True Crime book or maybe a biography and I also love music and I love going to rock concerts.

Faculty Spotlight - Burcu Tan Erciyes

Transcript

My name is Burcu Tan Erciyes. I'm an associate professor in the area of Operations Management. My department is MIDS.

I love Anderson because I think we have a wonderful community here. My colleagues are awesome; we always support each other, which is very important for me. I also love our diverse student body. When I first came here after teaching at a private university, it really did feel like a fresh breath of air. My students here are appreciative, respectful, eager and I take great joy in helping them navigate their studies.

I guess I'm fortunate that I really love all the courses that I'm currently teaching. I particularly enjoy teaching quantitative materials; that's my strong suit. I like teaching tools and methods that we can use to support decision making in a variety of business contexts. For example, in the undergraduate program, I teach business analysis tools which is always very fun to teach for me. For the graduate programs, I teach data-driven decision making and supply chain models and strategy. All of these courses have the kind of quantitative material that I really love teaching.

Faculty Spotlight - Sebastian Villa

Transcript

My name is Sebastian Villa. I'm an assistant professor at the Department of Marketing, Information and Decision Sciences here at Anderson. My research focuses on humanitarian organizations whose mission is to alleviate human suffering and provide the required support to the most vulnerable population. To study these humanitarian organizations, I use both an empirical and behavioral approach. The idea of this behavioral approach is to understand how managers can make their decisions. In this way, we can understand their biases. We can provide some recommendations for improving decision making.

This semester I'm teaching a course called Operations Management. In this course, the students learn how to design, control and improve processes required to transform an organization input into valuable products or services.

I chose Anderson because of two main reasons. The first one is the academic excellence, both in research and teaching. The Anderson School is a world class business school with excellent programs and outstanding faculty. And the second reason is because of the diversity of the student body. So I really enjoy the diverse perspective that I get from the class discussion, which also provides a unique experience for our students.

I'm excited to immerse myself into the local culture of the of New Mexico because I think this is the best way to understand people, traditions and their values. For example, I'm excited to continue tasting the delicious local food and to hike the Sandia mountains and of course, to enjoy the International Balloon Fiesta.

Faculty Spotlight - Chunlin Wang

Transcript

My name is Chunlin Wang. I'm new faculty to the Anderson School of Management. My department is Marketing, Information and Decision Sciences, it's called MIDS. I came here in August.

I taught a courses at the Radford University in Virginia for four years. Before that I worked at a post-doctorate at Vanderbilt University; that was a two-year period. I got my PhD in Business Administration with a focus on operation management from the University of Utah. I also have a mathematic PhD from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Additionally, I studied economics at the University of Pennsylvania and I got a master's degree there. My research focuses on retail operations, supply chain management and the management of outsourced R&D projects.

Anderson is very appealing to me from the stage of the interview. I feel that from the dean to the department chair to the search committee, they had a high expectation of hiring a very qualified candidate.

In New Mexico I hope I can do more research, teach new courses, get to know new people including students. Additionally, I hope I can explore the natural beauties in this state and the World Heritage Sites.
